This was the title of a round table held at Expocentre Fairgrounds to discuss the role of exhibition and congress activities in promoting the achievements of national science, introduction of the latest scientific and technical developments and innovative technologies in key sectors of modern production. The round table was timed to the start of the Year of Science and Technology 2021, announced by the President of Russia. 

The discussion also focused on the interaction between the authorities, business, research centres, enterprises and exhibition operators. The discussion was held in a hybrid format in the newly-established online studio at Expocentre. 

A moderator of the round table, Deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federal Assembly and Chairman of the Organising Committee of NTI Expo Vladimir Kononov, reminded that this year is the fifth anniversary of NTI Expo. The project helps to implement scientific achievements, turn them into technologies, technologies into industrial samples and then into serial production. NTI Expo was established by the State Duma Committee on Education and Science, the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Expocentre and is supported at the level of federal ministries and agencies. 

The annual NTI Expo programme includes large-scale events with state participation aimed at promoting national projects in science and technology, education, digital economy, industry, transport infrastructure, and energy. These include Russian Week of High Technologies, the RENWEX. Renewable Energy and Electric Vehicles international exhibition, Russian Industry Week, and the Artificial Intelligence Forum, said Vladimir Kononov. 

On behalf of Sergey Katyrin, President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Dmitriev, Vice-President of the Chamber, addressed the participants of the round table. According to him, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry is actively involved in the promotion of Russian scientific and technical developments and their commercialisation, working closely with the scientific, expert and business communities. 

Director General of EXPOCENTRE AO, Chairman of the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Committee on Exhibition, Fair and Convention Activities Sergey Bednov said in his speech that, in fact, all Expocentre exhibitions are associated with demonstration and promotion of the latest scientific and technical developments, innovative technologies, and advanced ideas. He gave specific examples of the growing role of exhibitions in promotion of scientific achievements, drawing attention to the importance of exhibition activities as an integral part of the Year of Science and Technology. 

According to the Laser Association (CIS), 30%-40% of solutions, equipment and components presented at this year's Photonics. World of Lasers and Optics will be new, cutting-edge developments from research institutes and centres. The Photonics 2021 programme of supporting events includes 26 scientific conferences, sessions, presentations and seminars with over 140 presentations planned. 

Further Sergey Bednov announced that the next Russian Week of High Technologies scheduled on 15-18 June will unite the Sviaz 2021 International Exhibition for Information and Communications Technology, Sviaz 2021 Forum on Digital Future of Telecom Industry, Russian Software Forum: Effective Solutions for Digital Economy, the Navitech 2021 International Exhibition for Navigation Systems, Technologies and Services, as well as International Navigation Forum and other significant events.   

The achievements of the industry enterprises will be presented in the thematic sections: telecommunications equipment, network infrastructure, data transmission networks, satellite and mobile communications, communication cables, IT services, Internet of Things, Russian software, IP technologies, and others. A special place at the Week’s venue within the Year of Science and Technology will be occupied by special expositions of universities and research organisations. 

From June 22 to 24 the 2nd RENWEX. Renewable Energy and Electric Vehicles international exhibition will be held. This is Expocentre's newest project in the field of renewable energy and environmental engineering. The exhibition will showcase state-of-the-art developments in the field of renewable energy sources and the electric transport sector in Russia. Along with the exhibition, the International Forum on Renewable Energy for Regional Development will take place. 

Russian Industry Week will develop further this October. In addition to the Technoforum 2021 International Exhibition for Equipment and Technology for Materials Processing and the Rusweld 2021 International Exhibition for Welding and Cutting Equipment, Technologies and Materials, the programme of the Week will also include the Reklama 2021 International Exhibition and the International Industrial Forum "NDT Territory", said Sergey Bednov. 

Mr. Bednov noted that besides the exhibitions and congresses of NTI Expo, the following industry exhibition and convention events will take place: Neftegaz, Metalloobrabotka, Elektro, Khimia, and Agroprodmash. There will also be exhibitions of the national light industry, Russian Construction Week, Russian Health Care Week, the country's largest international scientific and practical forum in the field of medicine and health care, and other events that will be an integral part of the Year of Science and Technology. 

The head of Expocentre drew attention to the fact that the format of many congress and exhibition events is changing in the face of new challenges and in particular the coronavirus pandemic. Hybrid forms of exhibitions are becoming more and more widespread. Exhibitions are not only a universal marketing mechanism, but also a living, flexible organism. It is not just a display of exhibits, but also a networking platform for mutual communication. It is therefore premature to talk about the future of virtual exhibitions. But hybrid forms of exhibition and congress events are entering our lives. Online and offline formats will complement each other seamlessly, stressed Sergey Bednov. 

The Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation Elena Druzhinina spoke in detail about the main plan of events for the Year of Science and Technology. According to her, more than 8,000 proposals were received from universities, research institutes, executive authorities, development institutes and state corporations to hold forums, conferences and exhibitions. 

Speaking about the importance of exhibitions and conventions for the development of industry, Mikhail Ivanov, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, said that the Ministry's list of events for this year includes more than 280 exhibitions. He mentioned RENWEX in particular, because, according to him, the issue of renewable energy sources is very topical today. The Deputy Minister also emphasised international exhibitions of Expocentre, dedicated to machine-tool industry – Metalloobrabotka, Technoforum, Rusweld - in terms of their importance for the domestic industry. 

Deputy Minister of Health Care of the Russian Federation Alexandra Dronova reported on the planned 136 scientific and practical events of the Russian Ministry of Health Care which will be held in particular at Expocentre Fairgrounds within the Year of Science and Technology. 

Ivan Kovsh, President of the Laser Association, who spoke by video link, complemented Sergey Bednov's presentation by saying that the Photonics exhibition is a key event for the industry. For 15 years it has been bringing together leading specialists and leading enterprises. Of all the high-tech exhibitions, Photonics has been growing in terms of space, number of exhibitors and visitors, despite any economic downturn.   The exhibition plays a major role as a business platform, especially for small businesses, which receive up to 80% of all orders through meetings and agreements at Photonics, said Ivan Kovsh. 

The discussion was attended by representatives of the Russian Ministry of Energy, Russian Ministry of Economic Development, Russian Ministry of Defence, profile structures of the city of Moscow, the Moscow and Ulyanovsk Regions, Lomonosov Moscow State University, MIPT, Kaspersky Lab, Competence Centre on Import Substitution in the field of ICT, All-Russian Society of Inventors and Innovators.
