Today EXPOCENTRE Fairgrounds hosted the opening of WoodworkingSkills 2021, the second WorldSkills championship for the furniture and woodworking industry, as part of the Mebel 2021 international exhibition.

The championship, which will run for three days from 22 to 24 November, is organised by the Association of Furniture and Woodworking Enterprises of Russia, WorldSkills Russia, and EXPOCENTRE AO. Employees of small, medium and large businesses in the furniture and woodworking industry, as well as students of the industry colleges from Moscow, Vladivostok, St. Petersburg, Krasnoyarsk and Yekaterinburg, will take part.

Timur Irtuganov, Director General of the Association of Furniture and Woodworking Enterprises of Russia, opened the championship by stressing that Woodworking Skills 2021 gives enterprises the opportunity to test their staff at the level of the industry's leading specialists.   

On the eve of the championship, Alexey Tymchikov, Deputy Director General and Technical Director of the Professional Skills Development Agency (WorldSkills Russia), also noted its significance for the furniture and woodworking industry. According to him, the tasks performed by the contestants help to form a real functionality of specialists in furniture and woodworking competences in production, give direction for updating training programmes of profile educational institutions, and determine the focus of development of professions for the next few years. 

For the WoodworkingSkills 2021 competition, the traditional competences for the furniture and woodworking industry were selected - Carpentry, Furniture Production, Woodwork Restoration, and Industrial Design. In addition to these, another competence is introduced for the first time - Furniture Production Site Foreman. 

In addition to the main competitions, representatives of the WorldSkills Russia national team in the furniture making and carpentry skills will hold an open training session at the championship site under the guidance of international experts as they prepare for the 46th WorldSkills Shanghai 2022 World Championship.
