The Metalloobrabotka 2021 international exhibition held at Expocentre Fairgrounds hosted a discussion on cooperation between machine-building enterprises in Russia and Switzerland with the aim of increasing their competitiveness through the use of new production technologies and the implementation of joint research and technological projects. Krystyna Marty Lang, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Switzerland to the Russian Federation, took part in the event.

A Symposium on the Advanced and Competitive Production Technology was organised by the Stankin Moscow State University of Technology and IWF ETH Zürich - the Institute for Machine and Plant Engineering Technology at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, one of Europe's leading universities.

Welcoming the participants of the symposium, Krystyna Marty Lang noted that Russia and Switzerland have different education, research and industry systems, so it is very interesting to compare mutual experiences with best practices.

She stressed the importance of the symposium and the cooperation between the scientific community and business. Switzerland invests 5.6% of GDP in education, about 3% in R&D. One third of the investment comes from the private sector. "Switzerland needs good partners for research and Russia is a priority country for us in the field of international cooperation," said the head of the Swiss diplomatic mission.

In his welcoming address to the symposium participants, Sergey Ivanov, First Deputy Chief of Staff of the Russian Engineering Union, pointed out that technical re-equipment of all branches of industry and dynamics of economic growth in general depend on the development of machine-building. Speaking about importance of the Metalloobrabotka 2021 exhibition which demonstrated the latest achievements of the leading Russian and foreign metalworking machinery producers, he also paid attention to its rich conference programme enabling the specialists to exchange experience and discuss the urgent problems

Alexey Kapitanov, Acting Rector of Stankin Moscow State Technical University, noted that the purpose of the symposium was to develop cooperation between Russian and Swiss engineering enterprises. According to him, Stankin attaches special importance to cooperation in the scientific and educational sphere with Swiss universities, scientific centres and enterprises. There are practical results of joint research.

The importance of such interaction in the interests of science and business of both countries was noted by Christoph Blättler, Secretary General of the SWISSMEM Swiss Association of Industrial Equipment Manufacturers, Georgy Samodurov, President of Stankoinstrument Association and Konrad Wegener, Director of ETH Zürich Institute of Machine Tool Building and Engineering Technologies.

During the three sessions the symposium participants discussed topical projects in the field of knowledge and technology transfer, prospects of partnership between universities and research centres in Russia and Switzerland, areas of cooperation in improving the competitiveness of mechanical engineering, development of feedback mechanisms between industry and universities, interdisciplinary projects and other topics.
