The discussion club on Use of Russian Innovative Materials in Product Design organised by the Russian Product Design Association (ASPD), was held as part of RosBuild 2019, a new international exhibition for building and finishing materials and technologies at Expocentre Fairgrounds.

As reported by discussion moderator Anastasia Krylova, President of the Guild of Design Industry Manufacturers, Suppliers and Experts at the Moscow Chamber of Commerce and Industry and ASPD Director, the discussion club was organised within the project of Moscow's participation in the World Design Capital global contest scheduled for 2022-2024.

The participants included companies specialising in design and manufacture of industrial products. A special emphasis was put on innovative technologies. The major issues discussed were the process of manufacturing products with new properties and application of the latest research and state-of-the-art technologies. Technology copying and copyright protection were also intensely discussed.

Experts from Art Up Studio, Karfidov Lab, and Inginity presented their projects – nanotechnologies and materials used in transport lighting equipment and smart lighting, air cleaning systems, and others. Success of such projects shows that Russian research results may be widely used in various sectors, particularly for building and finishing materials, fittings and accessories, and new interior design solutions.

Speakers paid much attention to composite technologies. For instance, carbon nanotubes have good mechanical characteristics, and enable a considerable improvement of mechanical strength characteristics of aluminum and building products. Special additives make it possible to manufacture fault- and wear resistant coatings.

Following the discussion, the participants concurred that innovations primarily meant understanding of consumers' needs.

Presentation of the projects of the worldwide renowned British architectural firm Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) made by its representative, Husam Shakuf, was a great success. The firm's corporate style is characterised by soft, fluid, soaring forms. Initially, the development of such architectural style was caused by the aim of lighting the buildings so that they look light and dynamic, rather than heavyweight constructions.

ZHA team is focused on design for "a smart interconnected city" that brings people together not only through innovative technologies, but also through organising public space. How it works in reality was clearly demonstrated by the projects of Geidar Aliev Centre in Baku, shopping and entertainment centre in Beijing, Polytechnic University building in Hong Kong, London Aquatics Centre, and other impressive implementations of innovative architectural concepts.
