Every year the exhibition increases its volume, and 2022 was no exception. This year, the Electric Vehicle and Charging Infrastructure Salon expanded its participation. This shows that RENWEX is a sought-after tool among exhibitors, both for promoting their products and for finding new markets and alternative supply chains.
Russia’s leading universities offered educational programmes, research and technological developments in the field of green energy and alternative transport:

Moscow Polytech displayed a Murena solar-powered boat, developed by the students as part of their project activities. Its main difference from previous versions is the availability of an on-board computer.

The students and professors of Moscow Power Engineering Institute presented the compact laboratory Renewable Energy in a Suitcase, which can be used to introduce schoolchildren to the operation of solar and wind power plants.

The Institute of Solid State Physics brings industry professionals together at its stand for the second year in a row. It is one of the largest institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences, which successfully combines fundamental and applied research of new materials. This year, the Institute presented batteries based on solid oxide electrolysis cells – hydrogen generators with record efficiency for hydrogen power.

The National University of Science and Technology MISIS demonstrated solar panels made of domestic materials: InPOWER solar panels, an improved version of perovskite-based solar panels by Maxenami (MXenes) and Thin Film Perovskite solar cells and modules.

The stand of Alekseev Nizhny Novgorod State Technical University demonstrated innovations for the energy industry: a hydrogen-based hybrid power plant, a wave-proof generation system and a wind-diesel power plant with optimised diesel fuel consumption, as well as electric drives for light commercial vehicles and automotive functional safety equipment for electronic systems.
Conference programme
After the welcoming speeches the first thematic session of RENWEX 2022 on the green economy and the decarbonisation of the Russian industry: a reset and new growth points started immediately. It was moderated by Irina Gaida, expert at the Skoltech Energy Transition and ESG Centre.
Industry experts discussed the role of green technologies for this country, which contribute to energy efficiency and energy saving. They talked about the federal Clean Energy Project, which is expected to generate 13 gigawatts of renewable energy by 2030.
Director at the Department of Machine Building for the Fuel and Energy Sector of the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade Evgeny Gribov and Director at the Department of Electric Power Industry Development of the Russian Ministry of Energy Andrey Maksimov took part in the discussion.
According to Director at the Renewable Energy Development Association Alexey Zhikharev, today is a period that can be called the second chance for the Russian economy to become more independent from traditional hydrocarbon sectors and move towards a high value-added industry in various sectors.
The participants in the Session on Regional Decarbonisation Programmes: Pilot Projects and Real Results talked about decarbonisation programmes in the Russian regions. The session was moderated by Director at the Russia Renewable Energy Development Association/Partner at VYGON Consulting Alexey Zhikharev, who explained that with the correct use of federal documents, regions could stimulate the active development of their economies, attract investment to their regions and create new jobs, thereby ensuring the long-term, sustainable development of the region's economy.
According to President at the Center for Strategic Research Foundation Vladislav Onishchenko, what is now important for the regions are inventories of emission sources and absorption capacity, requirements for self-budgeted investments in regulated sectors, support through incentives for new technological trends, and creating and supporting systemic accountability at the local level through training and advice.
Other participants included Advisor to the Russian Minister of Science and Higher Education Anton Shashkin, CEO at H2 Clean Energy Aleksey Kaplun, Director at the Institute of the World Ocean of the Far Eastern Federal University Kirill Vinnikov, Deputy Minister of Industry and Energy of the Rostov Oblast Vyacheslav Timchenko, and Chair at the Board of Directors of the Russian Association of Wind Power Industry Igor Bryzgunov. They discussed a range of other issues of practical relevance to regional renewable energy development.
The Session on Development of Distributed Generation in Remote and Isolated Areas of the Far East and Arctic was organised by the Corporation for Development of the Far East and Arctic.
The session was moderated by Vasiliy Potemkin, Deputy Director of the Department of Sectoral Expertise at the Corporation for Development of the Far East and Arctic. According to him, one of the strategic objectives of Russia in the energy sector is to develop distributed generation in remote and isolated areas. There are a lot of such facilities, and they are severely outdated. They need to be modernized. In addition, new capacities have to be put into operation. The question is primarily about the Far East and the Arctic.
Maksim Zagornov, President of the Distributed Power Generation Association, made a report about distributed generation. The Far East and Arctic are nearly half of our country, with only 8-10% of the population, but they contribute more than half to the Russian budget, and their share of export revenues is close to 70%. So investing in the energy sector in this region could undoubtedly be a profitable investment.
One more important event of RENWEX 2022 was the Strategic Session on Renewable Energy: Priorities, Human Resources, Laws. Representatives of the Russian State Duma, the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education, the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation, relevant scientific and research centres, leading universities and regional organisations took part in the event.
The session was moderated by Deputy Chair at the Russian State Duma Committee on Science and Higher Education, Chair at the NTI Expo Organising Committee Vladimir Kononov.

“Today's session is dedicated to extremely relevant issues for the industry, development prospects, staffing, and legislative support. It is gratifying that the higher education system pays great attention to participation in our exhibition. Despite difficult times and the withdrawal of many foreign equipment manufacturers from the Russian market, this did not affect the scale of RENWEX.”
Director of the Administrative Department at the Russian Ministry of Energy Irina Arefieva and Deputy Director of the Department of State Scientific and Technical Policy at the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education Kirill Borisov talked about what mechanisms to support green generation were being considered by the Russian Ministry of Energy and the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education. Representatives from energy-related higher education institutions also spoke at the session and described the training processes for renewable energy specialists.
The Session on Science and RES: Forming a Modern Environment for Technology Development summed up the results of the Renewable Energy of the Planet Russian Contest 2022. A total of 7,595 people from different regions of Russia took part in the online voting. The audience was presented with 60 entries in 8 categories. The winners included participants from Moscow, Kazan, Rostov-on-Don, and Taganrog.
The Session on the Prospects for the Development of Small-scale Hybrid Energy at RENWEX 2022 was moderated by Anton Usachev, Director of the Photovoltaic Industry Association, who highlighted the importance of a wider application of hybrid energy using solar and wind generation.
Maksim Gubanov, Head of Energy, Housing and Utilities at the Corporation for Development of the Far East and Arctic, spoke about the potential for introducing hybrid generation in the Far East and Arctic, which is now being maximised so that companies can implement their projects in these regions and invest in upgrading the energy infrastructure of the Far East and Arctic.
Other participants in the discussion were Senior Lecturer at the Basic Department of RES of Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas Vladislav Karasevich, CEO at Solar Energy Aleksey Zhuykov, Head of Project Sales at Unigreen Energy Group Aleksandr Maslov, and Director of AltEnergy NP, Chair at the Green Kilowatt Association of Renewable Energy Specialists Andrey Temerov. They presented projects that had been implemented and talked about how alternative energy was developing in Russia and the future of renewable energy sources in this country.
At the Session on Small Hydropower from Potential to Opportunities: Financing, Growth Point industry professionals discussed problems of small hydropower. The session’s moderator, President at the National Agency for Energy Saving and Renewable Energy (NAERE) Nikolay Safronov explained why it was not profitable to engage in small-scale hydropower in Russia.
General Director at the INSET Interindustry Scientific and Technical Association Yakov Blyashko and Deputy Director of the Department of Industry Expertise at the Far East and Arctic Development Vasily Potemkin spoke about the general problems of small-scale hydropower development and how the situation was changing.

The third day of RENWEX 2022 was devoted to electric transport and charging infrastructure.
The Session on Alternative Transport and New Technology was moderated by Chair at the Association for Development of the Electromobile, Unmanned and Connected Transport and Infrastructure Iya Gordeeva. The participants talked about state support measures for hydrogen transport, in particular, support for the production of electric vehicles and development of charging infrastructure. They used their companies as examples to discuss various areas of application of electric and other alternative transport technologies.
Deputy Director of the Hydrogen Technology Department at KAMAZ Semyon Kornilov spoke about the development concept of low hydrogen vehicles of KAMAZ.
The discussion was continued by CEO at Nextelectro and Deputy CEO at Spetsavtoinzhiniring Snezhana Trantina, who spoke about a Nextelectro module electrical platform.
Other speakers included Founder and CEO at Electromobiles Manufacturing Rus Ilya Rashkin, Head at the Electric Transport Laboratory of Moscow Polytech and Head at the EMP Moscow Team Semyon Zemtsev, representatives of the Autostat Analytical Agency, the Altenit Foundation, Ermak Industries, and other companies.
The Session on Developing Charging Infrastructure for Electric Vehicles continued an active discussion. According to moderator Iya Gordeeva, charging infrastructure for electric vehicles is an important component, without which electric vehicles will not develop.
Senior Managing Director at Rusnano Management Company Aleksey Tikhonov spoke about a comprehensive approach and the development of charging infrastructure.
Violetta Kiushkina and Anastasia Ryabkova, representatives of the Department of Energy Security and Infrastructure of the Fuel and Energy Sector of the Russian Energy Agency of the Russian Ministry of Energy spoke about monitoring the quantitative and qualitative parameters of the charging infrastructure. The E-PROM charging stations were presented by Marat Nurgaliyev, the company's Commercial Director. Director General at Electro.cars Maria Chernikova gave a presentation called 'Electric taxis – the public transport of the present'.
