Russian Health Сare Week 2019 played host to the 1st National Congress on the Export of Medical Services, organised by the Russian Ministry of Health Care, the Coordinating Centre on Implementing the Federal Project on the Development of Export of Medical Services, Vademecum, the National Council for Medical Tourism.

The congress presented initial results of the federal project of Development of Medical Services Export, which aims at increasing the value of exported medical services to one billion USD by 2024. Russian Deputy Minister of Health Care Oleg Salagai said in his greetings to the forum participants that the project was not just about increasing the number of foreign patients. It seeks to implement solid requirements for the quality of medical services, which will be based on international standards and will be available to Russian citizens above all.

The deputy minister named cardiology, ophthalmology, traumatology, orthopedics, neurosurgery, neurology, childhood diseases, dentistry, reproductive medicine and several others amongst medical services most popular with foreigners.

The project involves federal medical institutions and their colleagues from 71 regions. According to the Ministry of Health Care, 300,000 foreigners received medical treatment in Russia in 2018, and the number neared 530,000 in the first half of 2019. In the opinion of Oleg Salagai, this is a proof of foreigners’ interest in Russian medical services.

The issue of medical services export and attraction of foreign patients to Russian medical institutions was given a comprehensive consideration for the first time with the participation of representatives of all relevant organisations and agencies, including regional ones. The congress audience listened to speeches by First Deputy Chairman of the Russian Civic Chamber’s Commission on Health Care, Physical Culture and Promotion of Healthy Lifestyle Nikolay Daikhes, Director of the Department of International Cooperation and Public Relations of the Russian Ministry of Health Care Sergey Muravyov, General Director of Roszdravnadzor’s National Quality Institute Igor Ivanov, Head of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency Vladimir Uiba and other experts.
