Today the 11th Russian Internet Governance Forum (RIGF 2021) started in Moscow. The forum traditionally opens on the birthday of the .RU national domain, on April 7. The three-day programme of the forum includes seven sections with over 50 speakers, as well as 3 award ceremonies. More than 700 people have registered to take part in the event and 120 spectators have attended the off-line opening ceremony. Another 1,000 people followed the ceremony on Zoom, on YouTube and on the forum website rigf.ru.

RIGF 2021 brought together leading Russian and foreign experts, government officials and representatives of international NGOs, as well as Russian university students interested in global network security and global Internet governance.

Opening the forum, the Minister of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media of the Russian Federation Maxut Shadayev said: "The Internet is the nervous system of modern society, it requires careful attitude to itself. Russia was at the origins of the Global Internet Governance Forum (IGF) and became the first country in Eurasia to have a national Internet Governance Forum. Today we are facing new challenges and threats, and we have to look for new answers to them. And the dialogue taking place on the platform of the RIGF is of great value. I would like to wish the forum participants successful work and assure them that what is discussed here will be considered and put into practice!”

On the first day of the forum, participants included Andrey Vorobyev, Director of the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ; Tatyana Matveeva, Head of the Department for the Development of Information and Communication Technologies and Communication Infrastructure of the Presidential Executive Office; Alexander Khinstein, Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Technologies and Communication; Anriette Esterhuysen, Chairman of IGF Multistakeholder Advisory Group; Rashid Ismailov, President of VimpelCom; Dmitry Gulyaev, Youth Digital Ombudsman, and many others.
