Sergey Katyrin, President at the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry

“Today it is really not just a trade show, but a large project. In spite of all the sanctions, more than half the representatives of those countries that have announced them are taking part in it. All of them want to stay in the Russian market. They hope that they will be able to come back here and work fully not only at trade shows. Of course, the machine tool industry is the most important backbone industry. Our production volume has grown two and a half times in the last 15 years, but it's not enough so far. So we will rely on ourselves and on those who have not announced sanctions, who work and intend to keep working.”

The official opening ceremony was attended by President at the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Sergey Katyrin, Russian Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Mikhail Ivanov,  Deputy Chair at the Russian Federation Council Committee on Economic Policy Konstantin Dolgov, Deputy Chair at the Russian State Duma Committee on Science and Higher Education Vladimir Kononov, member of the Board of the Russian Military Industrial Commission Vyacheslav Shport, Director at the Industrial Development Fund Roman Petrutsa, Director at the Department of Strategic Development and Innovations of the Russian Ministry of Economic Development Rustam Tikhonov, Rector at the Stankin Moscow State Technical University Vladimir Serebrenny, Rector at the St. Petersburg State Marine Technical University (SPbSMTU)  Gleb Turichin, President at the Russian Association of Machine Tool Manufacturers Georgy Samodurov, and Director General of EXPOCENTRE AO Alexey Vyalkin.

Metalloobrabotka 2022 was attended by Russian Minister of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov. He made a tour around the show and took part in the signing of agreements on cooperation and strategic partnership between a number of Russian and Belarusian companies.

Denis Manturov, Russian Minister of Industry and Trade

“Metalloobrabotka has become more compact due to the withdrawal of some foreign companies from the market. But this niche has been filled by Russian manufacturers. This fact is confirmed by the large number of visitors; during the first two days of the exhibition there were 15% more than last year. Consequently, there are all the prerequisites for manufacturers to increase the volume of orders.”

The show was attended by Ambassador of India to the Russian Federation Pavan Kapoor. He drew attention to the fact that today's Indian machines combine high quality with a competitive price, and there should be more Indian machinery on display.

A cooperation agreement was signed in the presence of Minister for the Development of the Russian Far East and Arctic Alexey Chekunkov between Modern Foundry Technologies, an investor, and the Russian Far East and Arctic Development Corporation. A new enterprise for the production of machine tools will be established in the Far East.

One could see all everything related to metalworking and machine tool building:  automatic lines, metalworking machines, the latest generation of intelligent machine tool systems, innovative design developments, state-of-the-art software, and much more.

Industry professionals shared their experience in products sectors, which are now the most relevant for the Russian industry: Additive Manufacturing. Industrial 3D Printing, Industry 4.0, Welding and Related Technologies, Surface Treatment Equipment and Technology. They brought together leaders in the digital transformation of the metalworking industry, technical universities, promising young start-ups, specialists and experts.

A specialised section devoted to Science and Vocational Education was presented by Russia’s leading universities. Saint Petersbug State Marine Technical University (SMTU) showed its additive manufacturing developments, including the new serial laser growing unit ILIST-M, as well as import substitution parts for a 65 MW power turbine, created as part of joint work between SMTU and Power Machines.

EXPOCENTRE also organised a Subcontract Exchange, with support of the Yaroslavl Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and jointly with the National Partnership for Subcontracting Development. Ten customers and more than 30 contractors came from 30 regions of Russia. They held around 150 talks. They highlighted the importance of subcontracting.

Alexey Vyalkin, Director General at EXPOCENTRE AO

“We are glad to see the Subcontract Exchange at EXPOCENTRE Fairgrounds within the Metalloobrabotka 2022 conference programme. It is important because such formats of work are particularly in demand in the mechanical engineering and metalworking sectors.”

Conference programme

The conference programme offered every opportunity to learn the views of experts, representatives of business, science and relevant ministries, who presented their views on what the metalworking industry should look like in today's realities.

The programme was opened with the two-day Forum on the Potential and Prospects for the Machine Tool Industry in the New Economic Environment. It was organised by EXPOCENTRE AO and the Industry Project Management Centre, with participation of the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade.

At the plenary session, Yury Kuznetsov, Deputy Director at the Department of Machine Tool Building and Heavy Engineering of the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade, spoke about import substitution in the machine tool industry in the new economic environment and about state support measures to strengthen the establishment of the industry. Vasily Dedkov, Head at the Project Implementation Directorate of the Defence Industry Financial Recovery Department at Promsvyazbank, spoke about the measures being taken to safeguard the financial interests of customers while maintaining an acceptable level of risk for the bank. Fayaz Shabayev, First Deputy Director General at Mehanics AO, part of Rostec State Corporation, said that the departure of foreign manufacturers from the Russian market had forced a fundamental reconsideration of all previously practiced approaches in commercial production relations.

The forum included the Conference on Synchronising the Supply and Demand between Metalworking Equipment Manufacturers and Major Government Customers, and five panels on the Priority Areas for the Development of the Tool Industry, the Localisation of the Machine Tool Industry and Problems Arising from the Confirmation of Production on the Territory of the Russian Federation, the Technological Sovereignty: Critical Technologies and Growth Points, and the Technological Sovereignty: Staffing the Defense Industry.

One more important event at Metalloobrabotka 2022 was the hybrid INDUSTRY3D: the International Forum on Additive Technologies and 3D Solutions. Over five days its participants talked about the industry's performance under sanctions, challenges, opportunities, and state support measures.

According to Sergey Selivanov, First Deputy Director General at EXPOCENTRE AO, EXPOCENTRE pays special attention to additive technologies, which are presented not only at Metalloobrabotka but also at other trade shows.

Additive technologies are the tool with which our industry can resolve import substitution issues very quickly, said Mikhail Rodin, CEO at i3D. In his speech, he elaborated on the forum's programme. The participants talked about how the equipment, which had already been installed and was included in the sanctions lists, would be maintained, how the government would support Russian producers, and how expedient it would be to work with China.

"Additive technologies are included in higher education groups of specialities and training areas such as construction, photonics, instrumentation, optical and biotechnical systems and technologies, mechanical engineering, chemical technology, material technology, aviation and rocket and space technology, management in technical systems," said Pavel Forsh, Director at  the Department of State Research and Science and Technology Policy of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science.
